Details...
All large hotel chains have teams of salespersons on
the road selling meeting and convention space. A few technology-innovative chains have
adopted mobile computing solutions to help smaller sales forces sell more space. IT
Sheraton is one such company. About 100 sales staff received 75 MHz 486-based AT&T
Globalyst notebooks with 340 MB or 540 MB hard drives loaded with a Windows 3.1
application suite that includes WordPerfect 6.1, Lotus 1-2-3, and FreeLance Graphics.
Communication software is based on pcAnywhere from Symantec Corporation. Also included is
Delphi hotel reservation software. Each salespersons home office also was supplied
with an HP OfficeJet a multifunction device with printing, fax and copier combined
in one unit. Thus equipped, the sales force can now dial into the Delphi system at the
main office and make reservations directly from the field. This arrangement incorporates
elements of telecommuting, working from remote offices, working from home offices, and
mobile computing. Among the benefits, ITT reports costs savings, productivity gains, and
better customer service.
