There are many general office mobile computing applications available. We shall mention one or two as examples for illustrative purposes. Elected state/provincial government officials are highly mobile, having constantly to deal with the legislature, constituent offices and other government officials at municipal or federal levels. While they are mobile, officials also need to keep in touch with their offices. Many public sector staff move around campus-like complexes of offices. Wireless LANs can give them the mobility they need to do their jobs more effectively. For example, the Indiana state legislature has installed a wireless LAN and provided members of the legislature with NEC Versa notebooks equipped with wireless AIRLAN/PCMCIA cards. Along with office automation software and electronic mail, custom software has been developed to provide legislators with timely access to bills and proposed amendments, supporting legal documents, and state and federal constitutions.
