Details...
Avis was the first car-rental firm to introduce
GPS-based navigation in rental cars and had installed the equipment in 1000 vehicles in
1995. To use the computer-based navigational system, you press a button on a 4-inch
monitor and a message warns you to keep your eyes on the road. Then it asks you where you
want to go, allowing you to scroll down a list of pre-selected points of interest, such as
hotels, convention centers, or a specific street address. As you drive, the unit (built by
Rockwell International Corp) displays a color map of the area that you are passing. It
also emits an audible alarm prompt, just before when you need to turn or take an exit. The
feature is available for an extra charge.
