ThinAirApps Customer Stories
Profile: Sigma-Tau Pharmaceuticals, Inc.

Headquartered in Gaithersburg, Maryland, Sigma-Tau Pharmaceuticals, Inc. is the U.S. subsidiary of Italy’s leading research-based pharmaceutical company. The company has invested significant resources in the development of orphan drugs--drugs with a treatment population of fewer than 200,000 patients--that contribute to the health and well-being of humanity.
Sigma-Tau is committed to helping ensure that no patient is overlooked. Providing new or improved treatments for diseases that are complex and difficult to diagnose presents Sigma-Tau with the educational challenge of informing physicians and patients about medical symptoms and treatment options. No matter how small the patient population, Sigma-Tau endeavors to foster patients’ knowledge about and comfort with the use of its products.

The Challenge
According to Yamil Hernandez, Information Services Supervisor, Sigma-Tau, not having mobile access to e-mail, calendar, and contact information is detrimental to their business. Many of Sigma-Tau’s employees are always on the road, and are constantly receiving and sending large amounts of e-mail. Carrying a laptop on the road was not always feasible; however ready, reliable, and true portable access to e-mail, calendar, and contact information was a necessity. Sigma-Tau needed to find a more compact portable alternative that still provided all the information that users could get from their laptops, but without the bulk.

The Solution
After reviewing a number of different wireless hardware/software combinations, Sigma-Tau came to the conclusion that ThinAirApps’ ThinAir Server, combined with the Palm VII organizer would best meet its needs. Sigma-Tau’s mobile workers use the ThinAir Server and client to access their Microsoft Exchange e-mail, calendar, and contact information.

"In terms of software, no other company had a product that offered the feature sets that ThinAir Server did. The wireless platform had the most options, and was the easiest to install, configure, and maintain. And it has excellent SECURITY built in. As for hardware, many of our employees were already familiar with the Palm VII, so that made the transition easier." Yamil Hernandez, Information Services Supervisor

The Benefits
The main benefit to Sigma-Tau is that now traveling employees, ready access to their mail, calendar, and other information at any time. They have the ability to respond quickly to important matters, and to always have a live copy of their calendars with them. Users found that ThinAir Server was simple to use, and there was a very low learning curve. According to Hernandez, anyone who already knew how to use Microsoft Outlook could jump right in and use Thin Air Server.

The Future
The response to the Sigma-Tau’s wireless implementation has been extremely positive, so the company is now looking into other wireless solutions built around the Thin Air platform. One possibility is the Wireless SDK for ThinAir Server that will enable Sigma-Tau to wirelessly enable other corporate applications.
