(Updated on March 29,  2002 - Incorporating Content Provided By Mike Flom of Portable Internet)

Market Outlook

Market outlook for location-based services varies from one study to another. Primary driver of these applications is the sheer number of web-enabled phones that are being sold all over the world and desire on the part of consumers to make on-the-spot decisions

We are listing conclusions from different reports.  Readers may make their own conclusions b y studying various reports.

Ovum

Analyses
Analyses , a market research company, expects location-based services (which help users get directions or commercial services - nearest restaurant, theatre, etc.) could generate revenues of 18.5 billion dollars worldwide in 2006 - lower than hopes of wireless network industry. This is in the context of $2 billion market in 2001 and overall mobile services market of 200 billion dollars last year (seems high to MobileInfo). main conclusions:

  • Distribution by region - 31% in Europe, 22% in USA.

  • Consumer market - 77%

  • Youth market will lead

  • CELLID will succeed in the short run.  In the long run, more accurate technologies such as Assisted GPS (A-GPS) and Enhanced Observer Time Difference (E-OTD) will take over. Nokia launched its E-OTD service in Cannes, France in February 2001.
