January 25 – 3COM Delivers Mobile E-Networks with AirConnect 11Mbps Wireless LAN Solutions

 3Com Corporation now delivers 3Com®AirConnect™ 11Mbps Wireless LAN.  This LAN solution enables companies to extend their wired networks beyond their present desktops to boardrooms, lobbies and other common areas, allowing employees continuous access to email and other mission critical applications. 

3Com AirConnect solution comprises of wireless access points and notebook PC cards.  Affixed to a ceiling or wall, the access point acts as a bridge between the wired network and up to 63 simultaneous wireless PCs. 

The 3Com and AirConnect Wireless LAN is designed to reduce time and cost of implementation and relax the demands on IT resources and staff.  Its Site Survey Utility helps IT staff with the complex task of properly placing access points.  DynamicAccess® Mobile Connection Manager allows network managers to set up and distribute standard configuration profiles that allow users to switch between LAN, modem and wireless environment, as well as to access network resources anywhere on their university campus or corporate site.

MobileInfo Advisory and Comments: It is good to see major wireless LAN to crank up the speed to 11 Mbps standard.  Now we can give decent performance.  But users should not ignore the performance issues - how many stations can you have on a single access point and what is the effective speed versus the rated speed. Also, can we expect the vendors to keep the prices to a level where there is only a small premium over wireline LAN.
