PocketScript, Inc. Unveils Firsts in Electronic Prescribing

PocketScript, Inc., has released a speech-driven interface for a wireless, handheld e-prescribing system -- PocketScript™ SDI (Speech-Driven Interface).

With a speech-driven interface combined with touch-screen technology, physicians can:

  • Electronically send prescriptions directly to the pharmacy of the patient’s choice, either via a secure fax or an encrypted Internet transmission to a pharmacy computer.
  • Obtain patient records
  • Access insurance coverage information
  • Check for potential drug interactions

The solution features high-speed Internet access coupled with the capacity to wirelessly stream video and audio to a doctors’ PDA.

PocketScript worked with Microsoft to create the speech-driven capability. It has licensed Microsoft Windows CE technology and combined its patent-pending compression technology to create the speech-driven prescribing interface.

Speech Driven Technology

  • A speech command can be compressed, in less than one second, and sent via high-speed wireless transmission to an on-site computer server. The speech command is then decompressed, recognized, re-compressed and returned wirelessly to the handheld computer for visual confirmation by the physician.

Compression Technology

  • Proprietary compression technology enables large packets of information to be sent securely over a wireless connection. Physicians can access more than 60,000 patient records in a single second and allows physicians to write 350 prescriptions a day, without recharging the battery.

Using a radio frequency signal from a Proxim antenna inserted into a Windows CE-based PDA (such as the NEC Mobilepro™ 780 or the Hewlett Packard Jornada 690), PocketScript transmits data to a secure server that interfaces with the physician’s legacy system.

Scheduled for a third quarter 2000 release, PocketScript is currently being offered for the Hewlett-Packard Jornada, the NEC Mobilepro, and the Compaq Ipaq Pocket PC.
