IBM to Introduce 1GB Hard Drive for Handhelds

IBM launched its third generation Microdrive -- the 1GB Microdrive – which triples the capacity of its earlier 340MB and 512MB Microdrives.

The 1GB Microdrive

  • Weighs less than an ounce and is smaller than a matchbox
  • Brings high-capacity data storage, for example, 1,000 high resolution photographs, a thousand 200 page novels or 18 hours of high-quality digital audio music
  • Brings enhanced data storage to
      • Digital cameras
      • Handheld PCs
      • PDA’s
      • Portable music players and video cameras
  • Serves as data exchange accessory to
      • Notebooks
      • Desktops
      • Printers
  • Fits into industry standards CF+ Type II slot and can be paired with PC Card (PCMCIA) adapter for use with notebooks or USB readers
  • Is affordability price at $499

IBM will ship the 1GB Microdrive to OEMs in July with retail shipments scheduled for September. We, more than likely, can look forward to compatible devices from Acer, Casio Computers; the IBM Personal Computer Systems Group; Eastman Kodak Company; Fuji Photo Film; Hewlett-Packard; i2Go; Minolta; Nokia; Psion; RICOH, and Sanyo.
