Microsoft Unveils Vision for Next Generation Internet

To capitalize on its work in areas such as handheld devices, Internet content, Web television, Microsoft Corp unveiled its Microsoft .NET (or referred as dot-net) strategy. At the core of the strategy is the Microsoft .NET platform that will be woven into all Microsoft products including its Windows OS and Office suite of business software to enable devices and services to easily swap information. The new .NET platform is built on XML that makes it easier to exchange data between different computers and networks.

The new platform consists of the following technologies:

.NET User Experience brings a new set of technologies.

  • Universal Canvas XML-based compound information architecture
  • Natural user interface
  • Integral digital media support
  • Privacy-enabling technologies for management of personal information
  • Dynamic Delivery system for secure and seamless installation, updates, roaming and offline operation

.NET Infrastructure and Tools are built off the XML-enabled family of Windows DNA 2000 servers.

  • Visual Studio 7.0 provides comprehensive, high-productivity support for XML-based Web service development
  • BizTalk™ Orchestration tool simplifies business process integration over the Internet

.NET Building Block Services combines Windows technology with Web-based services.

  • A new family of distributed, programmable developer services that run in corporate data centers or across standalone machines and the Internet.
  • It brings together elements of Windows technology and Web-based services, such as Passport, the MSN Hotmail, MSN Messenger and MSN Communities, to deliver a set of building blocks for developers to use in their products for either a single machine or across the Internet.

"The new platform will affect every piece of code that gets written. There is not a Microsoft product that isn’t touched," Bill Gates said at the unveiling of prototype .NET products such as computers that recognize and answer voice commands and a digital notepad that can understand handwriting.

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory: Mobile computing developers must keep abreast of Microsoft Net strategy because handhelds are gaining more importance than ever. Microsoft, in spite of its unimpressive performance in this area so far, will become an important player in future. Higher level application development tool developers must build cross-platform tools and include Pocket PC and Net in their plans.

Note: This news release may contain forward-looking statements. Readers should take appropriate caution in developing plans utilizing these products, services and technology architectures.
