Motorola and Bopack Systems to Develop Next-Generation Wireless Automatic Identification Systems

Motorola, Inc. and Bopack Systems, a producer of automatic identification solutions, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to jointly develop and market smart label solutions. Bopack will use Motorola’s BiStatixT radio frequency identification (RFID) technology to produce paper-based smart labels. These smart labels will store small computer chips that can be read and modified through a wireless interface.

Advantages of BiStatix

  • Similar to traditional information carriers using RFID technology, BiStatix tags contain a silicon chip with information and an antenna guiding the reader energy to the chip. However, instead of using a copper cable or etched metal for an antenna, BiStatix uses a printer conductive-ink surface, which absorbs the reader energy to power up a silicon memory chip.
  • BiStatix chips can be affixed to any non-conductive paper-based carrier. Bopack will manufacture labels or tags that can conform to the contour of most products or packages, such as plastic bags or bottles.
  • BiStatix labels remain readable if creased, crumpled, or damaged, or exposed to moisture, dirt, dust, or paint.

With a formatted memory capacity of approximately 800 useable bits and the ability to read and write data, BiStatix labels can be used to improve many applications, such as

  • Reducing transport and shipping costs
  • Simplifying bills of landing and international shipping documents
  • Tracking of high value and high security goods like pharmaceutical products
  • Identifying authorized persons to sporting events, amusement parks, ski lifts, theaters or cinemas

Bopack will market the smart labels throughout France and the Benelux countries.

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory: RFID market is making progress. Good to see Motorola put its weight around BoPack.  It will help in automating manufacturing processes.
