Cable & Wireless and Nokia Partner to develop Global Wireless Internet and Hosted Applications

Cable & Wireless and Nokia have agreed to create a global wireless Internet platform. Under the terms of the agreement, Cable & Wireless will supply the data center information and connectivity to its global IP backbone. Nokia will provide the service platform and innovative applications and systems integration that are compatible with Cable & Wireless’ Internet system.

The Cable & Wireless/Nokia agreement aims to benefit 2G and 3G mobile operators, ISP, and dot.coms. These companies will have access to a wide portfolio of wireless applications to be sold to customers under their own brand, without having to build their own hosting platforms.

Cable & Wireless’ multinational corporate customers can expect tailored wireless access services that will enable their employees and customers to access Web sites, applications, and corporate information systems from wireless devices.

The two companies expect to offer services in late 2000, commencing with the Telco’s European customers.

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory: Nokia is going beyond their traditional space but using the arms and legs of network providers. Two strong players worth considering for large projects!
