Texas Police Uses Palm PocketCop to Help Fight Crime

The Texan Highland Park Police Department chose to implement PocketCop™ developed by Public Safety Group, Inc. (PSG). The PocketCop is an out-of-the-box public safety solution that uses handheld wireless Palm devices to allow officers instant access to state and federal databases.

Instead of returning to their vehicle to record information, officers can use a handheld wireless device and a stylus to query, access, and record information anywhere, at anytime. For example, license plate numbers can be searched easily and quickly thus enabling officers to determine if a car is stolen. In addition, drivers’ licenses of individuals who are caught at the scene of a crime or present during a police investigation can be searched for outstanding wants or warrants or previous arrest records. The application also offers e-mailing and messaging capabilities. The PocketCop will be ideal for Highland Park’s bike patrols, investigators, and covert operation team members. Investigators working on cases out-of-town will have access anywhere in the US where there is wireless CDPD coverage.

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory: Public safety has been among the first mobile computing applications that involved expensive ruggedized PCs, custom applications and private networks. While you can cost justify ruggedized equipment in most cases because it goes through a heavy use in harsh environment, we do need less expensive "out-of-box" solutions with public shared networks in other situations. There is a need and place for this less-expensive solution among members of law enforcement agencies. We welcome the product.
