SEAGULL Enables Real-Time Wireless Access to IBM Mainframe via PocketPC

Microsoft Corporation and SEAGULL have announced a strategic alliance to deliver real-time wireless access to IBM enterprise applications with Microsoft’s PocketPC. The solution comprises of SEAGULL’s Wireless-to-Host technology, Windows 2000 platform, and the PocketPC.

With SEAGULL’s Wireless-to-Host Solution, IBM mainframe and AS/400 business applications can be deployed easily for real-time data access from PocketPCs with a wireless modem.

Wireless-to-Host Solution bridges the gap between IBM mainframe and AS/400 back-office applications and the Windows 2000 Server platform by connecting the application business logic and transactions into the BizTalk environment and providing a path to wireless devices through Windows 2000.

SEAGULL and Microsoft plan to promote the solution to Microsoft’s network of certified solution providers, as well as to customers directly.

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory: A lot of enterprise data will continue to reside on IBM mainframes and 400,000 plus AS/400 systems. These applications must be wireless-enabled. SEAGULL's use of PocketPC to do this is welcome. Microsoft is moving gradually and surely into this space. In some ways, a solution based on Windows derivative - PocketPC, has superior compatibility and integration with existing client applications than those based on simpler but less functional Palm Pilot.
