German Telecommunications Giant Acquires VoiceStream for $50 billion

The German telecommunications giant, Deutsche Telekom, has acquired VoiceStream, an American mobile company who operates wireless networks, for $50 billion. This is a record amount for the mobile communications industry. With Voicestream’s recent expansion, its use of the GSM standard and its coverage of the major geographical markets in America, Deutsche Telekom believes this amount has been justified. Deutsche Telekom will invest $5 billion on expanding VoiceStream's network for next delivery of next generation mobile services. VoiceStream will continue to operate under its own brand and will carry on operations in North America independently.
