Microware Announces Integrated Bluetooth Capability for OS-9

Microware Systems Corporation announced that it has signed an agreement to port Extended Systems’s Bluetooth protocol stack to OS-9®, a real-time operating system (RTOS).  Presently, Microware is using Extended Systems’s infrared (IrDA-compliant) protocols within OS-9.

OS-9 will have a complete Bluetooth protocol stack built into the software, allowing developers to bring Bluetooth-enabled products to market much faster. Instead of taking months to build a custom Bluetooth stack, OS-9 developers will only have to make a few simple modifications to their existing code.

Bluetooth is a short-range technology that simplifies communications among devices such as cell phones, PDAs, and computers, as well as between those devices and the Internet. Bluetooth accomplishes this by connecting and networking devices via radio waves, transmitting data at a high rate within a limited range.

Bluetooth for OS-9 will be available in the fall of 2000.

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory:  Bluetooth is moving along at a good clip in becoming a general-purpose personal area network (PAN) technology. OS-9 is a product that will help in developing applications based on Bluetooth.
