Transvirtual Technologies Delivers PocketLinux to Mobile Application Developers

At the LinuxWorld Expo, Transvirtual Technologies, Inc. announced the release of its PocketLinux Framework, a single, Open Source application development environment for all mobile computing devices.

PocketLinux integrates Kaffe, a cross-platform development environment, with embedded Linux. PocketLinux will not only allow developers to build mobile applications rapidly and deploy them across multiple platforms but also allow users to access any application and data on any PDA or other handheld platform. Users can create PINs that give them the information they want, when, where, and how they want it. Both developers and users can also "theme" PDAs running PocketLinux applications, changing the look and feel of each application to fit specific requirements.

PocketLinux Platform supports the following:

  • Streaming video and MPEG audio
  • A suite of personal information management applications
  • XML
  • Bi-directional data synchronization via the Internet

Features of the PocketLinux Platform:

  • A proxy server framework that enables translation of online content.
  • A portal infrastructure that enables rapid configuration and personalization of PDAs and other PocketLinux devices.
  • An integrated frame buffer graphic library that allows direct rending of graphics without an external windowing system, such as the X Window System of the Unix family, and the construction of graphical user interfaces (GUIs) that run on very resource-constrained appliances.

Transvirtual also announced plans for a new PocketLinux Partner Program. The program will provide support and other resources for OEMs, application developers, and other licensees of PocketLinux technologies.

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory: Pocket PC will see some competition now - it will be a slow but steady path upwards for Pocket Linux.
