Nokia Licenses WAP 1.2 Compliant Browser Source Code

Nokia has released its WAP Browser 2.0, compliant with the WAP 1.2 specification.

The company is making its browser available to mobile phone and other device manufacturers as source code. By shipping the browser in source code, Nokia gives customers the essential WAP 1.2 baseline functionality to add extensions or modifications as needed. For example, a wireless carrier would have the option of creating a brand user interface for the browser and then making it available to their subscribers. Handset and PDA manufacturers could also add new features to their products such synchronization or instant messaging and then integrate those features with the core browser.

The current release of the browser supports the following:

  • WML 1.2
  • WML Script
  • Push functionality

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory: WAP 1.2 is more functional. Users should seriously consider writing to WAP 1.2 specifications.
