PacketVideo Releases Wireless Streaming Video

PacketVideo Corp. has announced the release of its PVPlatform™ 1.0, deemed the industry’s first commercially available wireless streaming video delivery system for handheld devices. The company is now offering a complete solution for wireless service providers, wireless semiconductor and device manufacturers, and wireless content providers.

PVPlatform 1.0 is a standard-based, an end-to-end software solution designed to provide encoding, transmitting, and decoding services. The platform’s components are designed to be device operating system and air-interface independent. Theses components include the following:

  • PVAuthor™, a professional encoding product that prepares rich media for transmission over wireless networks.
  • PVServer™, which stores and distributes rich media to subscribers over wireless networks.
  • PVPlayer™, the end piece of the suite that decodes and plays rich media for viewing on current and next generation wireless devices from handheld computers to Smartphones. Currently, the PVPlayer is operating in the new Compaq iPAQ, the Casio CASSIOPEIA E115, and the HP Jornada 545. It is designed to support many operating systems, including PocketPC, and Windows CE 3.0.

The platform is based on the MPEG-4 (Motion Pictures Expert Group 4) compression standard. PacketVideo’s products offer error-resilient technology that enhances the standard by recognizing and concealing errors inherent in wireless networks, enabling mobile information devices to receive enhanced video image quality.

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory: Multi-media is slowly but stadily making its entry into handhelds. However, do not expect to load stuff wirelessly, except in high-value applications. Kiosk approach is more appropriate and cost-effective.
