This project, referred to as The Quantum Project, will cover 137 prison establishments in England and Wales. According to Symbol, it is potentially one of the largest wireless network infrastructures in the world.

The Quantum Project will involve implementing the following:

• Windows-based computers and applications, including e-mail
• Symbol Spectrum24® wireless LAN infrastructure to cover areas where cabling would be inappropriate or areas currently not covered by wired networks

• A 2Mbps data rate solution for business-critical voice and data applications
• An open architecture that supports the IEEE 802.11 airwave standard

• Deployment of Voice over IP (VoIP)
• Deployment of mobile computing applications

Symbol’s mobile computing and wireless infrastructure products have also been deployed across Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department correctional facilities. These systems are used for audit trail applications such as tracking inmates, their personal property, their legal records, facility assets, and employees.
