Columbitech Introduces Secure WAP Access Product

A new wireless data communications company from Sweden, Columbitech, has introduced its first product, using its patent-pending technology, that delivers WAP connectivity to Web servers and total end-to-end security based on open standards. The Columbitech WAP Connector™ integrates its WAP stack into a Microsoft Internet information server (IIS) and other major content servers. In contrast to other WAP servers, the Columbitech WAP Connector is built entirely on industry-standard Web technology and thus enables full support from third-party developers.

Features of the Columbitech WAP Connector

  • End-to-end Security: According to the company, its patent-pending technology solves security problems inherent in operator-hosted WAP gateway solutions.
  • Minimal security-administration complexity: The product is fully integrated with Windows NT and Windows 2000 security systems. It can be set up to allow employees to use their existing office user accounts, making it easier for mobile users and system administrators.
  • Easy Integration and Maintenance: Being fully integrated with Microsoft IIS, the product offers users the following benefits:
      • Simplified installation, configuration, support, and maintenance via ASP scripting technology
      • Easy integration with many third-party products through use of ISAPI
      • Reduced time and cost of employee training, as the product has minimal administrative impact on existing systems
  • Over-The-Air (OTA) Configuration of WAP Terminals – With OTA configuration, the WAP Connector can be automatically set up to use corporate WAP services. All necessary parameters are sent directly to the WAP terminal thus allowing the user to dial into the WAP service, without any manual configuration.

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory: MobileInfo always believed in superiority of end-to-end security approach that is implemented at the two ends of a conversation and not left to a middleperson (whether it is an ISP or a network service provider) do it. Therefore, we support Columbitech approach from Europe. Integrating WAP stack in the corporate IIS server is a better solution as it is for encryption and security. It will be up to this young start up to prove that their product implementation is as good as its concept. Let user organizations verify that.
