ESRI and Tadpole-Cartesia Announce New Field Solution for ESRI Customers

ESRI and Tadpole-Cartesia, the field mapping systems business unit of Tadpole Technology plc, have announced a strategic agreement to combine their technologies to deliver a Geographic Information System (GIS) mobile computing solution. The solution is expected to be complete by the fourth quarter of 2000.

Under the terms of the partnership, ESRI’s ArcIfno 8 professional GIS software will be integrated with Tadpole’s Conic mobile GIS software.

From departmental GIS to large field service enterprises, ArcIfno 8 is a scalable solution that provides a complete, integrated platform for creating, managing, and disseminating geographic information. In contrast, Conic is a robust, object-oriented field data capture software package, with four levels of functionality

  • Conic Mapbook, which provides field map viewing and navigation
  • Conic Redline, which provides redlining and sketching
  • Conic Inspection, which provides data attribute access and query
  • Conic Survey, which provides basemap modification capabilities

The new solution would be ideal for the utilities sector, from gas to telecommunications.

Key applications such as field inventory, field design, and data capture would benefit utility work crews, customer service representatives, and many utility professionals, who need the capability to download and upload data quickly and easily.

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory: This is a good strategic relationship because it capitalizes on individual core strengths of both companies. There are too many companies dissipating their energies in competing in areas where they are not strong intrinsically. May we suggest that Tadpole and ESRI do a good job of integration so that it looks like one product from a user interface point of view, rather than two products with their own interfaces. Let the technologists in two companies bury their pride in the wisdom that they succeed when users succeed.
