2000 - 32 (Sept. 2000) TECHNOLOGY Lucent and PacketVideo Collaborate to Optimize Next-Generation Wireless Multimedia Following recent media hype over the announcement of its wireless multimedia platform, PacketVideo Corporation has now signed a collaborative development agreement with Lucent Technologies Microelectronics Group to optimize multimedia solutions on next-generation mobile devices. Under the agreement, the two companies will optimize PacketVideo’s wireless media software solution for higher performance and lower power consumption on Lucent’s wireless platforms.
Since these platforms are packet-based wireless standards, they enable an "always-on" connection for wireless devices and faster Internet data transmission speeds than found on 2G wireless devices. PacketVideo is an end-to-end multimedia solution, PVPlatform™, for streaming video delivery for handheld devices. The software provides encoding, transmission, and decoding capabilities based on MPEG-4 (Motion Pictures Exert Group 4) compression standard. "Using the PacketVideo software with Lucent’s established position in wireless terminal chipsets, coupled with Lucent StarCore SC100 capabilities, will help set the benchmark for next-generation multimedia applications," said Dr. James Brailean, President of PacketVideo.
