Nextel Introduces Wireless Internet Service for Businesses

Nextel Communications, Inc. has launched its Nextel Online Wireless Internet Services in selected U.S. markets.

The service offers business customers Nextel Internet-capable "plus" phones which are described as a "four-in-one wireless business communication tool." Manufactured by Motorola, these phones integrate Internet service, Nextel Direct Connect® digital two-way radio service, digital cellular service, and text/numeric paging into one phone. In addition, Nextel has partnered with Phone.com and Cisco to deliver an integrated packetized voice and data service. Nextel One offers customers immediate access to the Internet, eliminating the need to dial-in as with the wireless data services. The company also has partnered with Microsoft to avail its customers of MSN services.

Nextel Online Features:

  • Nextel Two-Way Messaging is a service that enables subscribers to send, receive, and reply to text messages between data-enabled phones, Nextel Online, and any e-mail client.
  • Personalized Online Content allows Nextel customers to create their own personalized Web portal with access to MSN content.
  • Personalized Prioritized E-Mail enables customers to read and respond to e-mail through an MSN Hotmail account and establish filters to receive only the most relevant information from certain contracts or projects.
  • Personalized E-Commerce offers users a total shopping experience with many major e-tailers.
  • List Manager allows customers to mange their Nextel phone list and Nextel Direct Connect private ID and group lists from their desktop PC or from their Internet "plus" phones.
  • eDispatch is ideal for the transportation, construction, and field service industries. It allows dispatchers to receive job status and job completion information from the field.

Through the Nextel Developers Program, comprising of developers of wireless applications for vertical markets, the company plans to enhance its service offering in the coming months.
