2000 - 40 (Nov. 2000) TECHNOLOGY Open GIS Consortium Announces Wireless Location Services Initiative An international industry consortium of over 200 stakeholders, Open GIS Consortium (OGC), Inc. announced the first phase of the Open Location Services (OpenLS) Initiative with the release of Call for Sponsors (CFS) and Request for Technology (RFT) documents. The mandate of the OpenLS is to develop industry standards to support the development and implementation of wireless location-based services. OGC’s ongoing test bed program, guidelines, and resources are in place to ensure that the creation of such standards is achieved in minimal time, said the OGC. Together, the CFS and RFT documents set out the opportunity for companies in communications, Internet, and manufacturing industries to participate in the shaping the standards required for the growth of the location services market.
