Open GIS Consortium Announces Wireless Location Services Initiative

An international industry consortium of over 200 stakeholders, Open GIS Consortium (OGC), Inc. announced the first phase of the Open Location Services (OpenLS) Initiative with the release of Call for Sponsors (CFS) and Request for Technology (RFT) documents.

The mandate of the OpenLS is to develop industry standards to support the development and implementation of wireless location-based services. OGC’s ongoing test bed program, guidelines, and resources are in place to ensure that the creation of such standards is achieved in minimal time, said the OGC.

Together, the CFS and RFT documents set out the opportunity for companies in communications, Internet, and manufacturing industries to participate in the shaping the standards required for the growth of the location services market. Both documents are available for viewing and downloading at www.openis.org.

The OpenLS Initiative will focus on the development and demonstration of interface specifications in the following areas:

  • Location application services and related location content, such as electronic yellow page query and display, route determination and display, and map/feature display and interaction.
  • Gateway Services that integrate location applications with mobile terminals, wireless platforms, IP platforms, and mobile position determination systems that operate between wireless-IP systems and location applications servers.
  • OGC Services Framework, or services and content protocols that have been developed and tested in previous tested initiatives.
