Ericsson Launches R380 – Combo PDA and Phone

To differentiate its all-in-one device from the likes of Nokia’s Communicator 9000 and SAGEM’s WA3050, Ericsson has launched, in the United States, a mobile phone combining the functionality of an international telephone with PDA features. The R380 WORLD may look like a typical mobile phone but under the flip-up cover lies a large, graphics-rich, touch-sensitive screen for accessing e-mail, the mobile Internet, and e-organizer. This is in addition to international roaming in over 120 countries, on five continents.

Features of the 380 WORLD:

  • Symbian’s Operating System
  • WAP security and soft token authentication for m-commerce and m-banking WAP Services
  • Access Internet Information
  • Corporate network
  • Send and receive e-mail
  • Low power consumption
  • Editing to-do lists and contacts
  • Touchscreen with stylus and virtual keyboard
  • Handwriting recognition with JOT® by CIC
  • Compatible with Microsoft Outlook and Lotus
  • Option to synchronize data with a PC
  • Voice Features
  • Voice Control allows calls to be placed or answered using a voice command
  • Speakerphone option
  • SilentVibe@, a vibrate alert instead of a ring

The Ericsson R380 WORLD will be available in the United States before the end of this year.

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory: Ericsson's R380 is a neat PDA-phone combination. We saw it in Las Vegas last week and were impressed with the form factor. Network support with GSM in North America is iffy. Plan your applications after serious discussion with your GSM carrier and considering North American GSM support issues.  It is not a clear sailing.
