HP Forms Alliances to Expand Mobility and the Internet

Ailing itself with those that share its vision for combining the elements of mobility and the Internet, Hewlett-Packard Company announced agreements with Nokia Corporation, Palm, Inc. and Ericsson. Each partnership will aim to extend Web-based print capabilities to mobile phones and handheld devices.

Nokia and HP
Building on an Internet-based platform, the two companies intend to develop a host of mobile e-services. The initial application would enable a user equipped with a Nokia mobile phone to print a document directly from the Web; the phone would beam the Web-page’s URL to a Web-enabled HP printer. Based on industry standards such as IR, vCard, or Bluetooth, the solution would enable mobile phones to send the URL of a document to an HP printer.

Palm and HP
HP plans to develop a wireless printing prototype that connects the Palm V family of handheld computers to a HP Bluetooth-enabled printers.

Ericsson and HP
The two companies intend to develop a prototype that demonstrates the capability of HP Bluetooth-enabled printer to print stored data, such as phonebooks, calendars, and SMS from a mobile phone.

The agreements will leverage technology developed in HP Labs’ "CoolTown" research project. CoolTown architecture will enable Web content to be accessed using standard browser technology built into cell phones, printers and other applications, said the company.

MobileInfo Comments and Advisory: We were impressed with Corly Fiorina's keynote speech at Comdex in Las Vegas last week. We think that she has a superior vision of mobile computing future and intends to lead HP there quickly. We expect more partnerships from HP in this area. These announcements are part of HP's overall push into mobile commerce. HP should also move Bluetooth technology forward.
