CTIA Proposes Customer Control of User Location Info

The convergence of wireless and the Internet has provided many opportunities for new commercial ventures, from marketing initiatives to roadside assistance. However, it has also raised a string of privacy issues. In an effort to address these concerns, the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association (CTIA) recently submitted a proposal setting out location-based services privacy principles to the FCC. The organization has put forth guidelines to direct carriers, manufacturers, and third party vendors in the use of consumer wireless, location-related information.

The Proposed Four Principles:

  • Inform each customer about the collection and use of location information.
  • Provide the customer with a meaningful opportunity to consent to the collection of location information before such information is used.
  • Ensure the security and integrity of any data collected and permit the customer reasonable access to ensure its accuracy.
  • Provide uniform rules and privacy expectations so consumers are not confused as they roam or use different location technologies.

With the emergence of location-based services, it is important that consumers understand the services, and feel comfortable using them. Irregardless of how the service is accessed, whether from a PDA or handset, or through a wireless carrier or a third-party, it is important that it meets these important principles, said Tom Wheeler, president and CEO of CTIA.

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory: This is a big issue. We applaud CTIA in taking the lead in setting guidelines. The vendors and carriers must implement these guidelines.
