2000 - 44 (Dec. 2000) TECHNOLOGY CTIA Proposes Customer Control of User Location Info The convergence of wireless and the Internet has provided many opportunities for new commercial ventures, from marketing initiatives to roadside assistance. However, it has also raised a string of privacy issues. In an effort to address these concerns, the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association (CTIA) recently submitted a proposal setting out location-based services privacy principles to the FCC. The organization has put forth guidelines to direct carriers, manufacturers, and third party vendors in the use of consumer wireless, location-related information. The Proposed Four Principles:
With the emergence of location-based services, it is important that consumers understand the services, and feel comfortable using them.
