In response to the growing number of Java-enabled wireless computing devices either in development or on the market, Metrowerks has launched a set of Java development tools to meet users’ expectations for rich, innovative applications. The company claims the tools are the first to support the Mobile Information Device (MID) profile; targeted at wireless devices with limited memory and processor power.

CodeWarrior® for Java, Version 6.0:

  • Provides an integrated development (IDE) for programming "100% Pure Java technology-based applications"
  • Uses Java 2 Platform Micro Edition (J2ME), PersonalJava™ and Java 2 Platform Standard Edition (J2SE) standards
  • Allows developers to create, compile, link, emulate, test and debug J2SE, PersonalJava, and J2ME applications
  • Provides sophisticated project manager and build system, class browser and code navigation system, text editor, debugger, emulators, and drag and drop graphical user interface (GUI) development tools
  • Wizards for creating applets applications and JavaBeams
  • Supports Java Developers Kits 1.1.x,1.2.x,1.3.x, and MRJ 2.2.x (on Mac OS and Mac OS X Public Beta)
  • Offers extensibility and customization options, including an open API to plug-in third-party tools
  • Supports Java-based wireless devices such as
        • J2ME Connected Limited Device Configuration (CLDC) and
        • Mobile Information Device (MID) profile.

In addition, the latest version of CodeWarrior for Java includes PointBase database, which is ideal for applications targeted towards small devices and enables the development of applications and databases simultaneously in one environment.

Speaking on the advantages of the combination of PointBase and CodeWarrior, Bruce Scott, president and CEO, PointBase Inc., said, "The combination offers developers the smallest Java database footprint available, a powerful development environment, fully JDBC and SQL compliant solution and synchronization with all major enterprise databases."
