Nextel To Begin M-Commerce Initiatives

If there is one barrier to mass market adoption of m-commerce, it is end-to-end security. With this in mind, Nextel Communications, Inc. is determined to provide its subscribers with "simple, secure, and reliable transaction capabilities." In an effort to meet its objectives, the company has been forming alliances with m-commerce solution providers: first with SNAZ for its one-click shopping solution, and, more recently, with Trintech for its PayWare wireless Payment Platform.

Trintech’s Wireless Payment Solution
Trintech claims that PayWare will provide wireless Web users with the same kind of security currently available with PC-based transactions.

  • A Nextel subscriber will be able to purchase products and services from designated merchants using their Web-enabled handset.
  • No need for the customer to enter personal or credit card information for each transaction.
  • Trintech’s platform manages every subscriber’s personal payment information.
  • PayWare delivers only relevant data to the merchant’s site.
  • The platform captures and stores digital receipts.

Trintech’s PayWare Wireless Payment incorporates the following:

  • PayWare mAcess, a server-based m-commerce infrastructure solution that streamlines and simplifies the user’s shopping experience.
  • PayWare elssuer, a server-based issuing solution that deploys virtual payment cards to the end-user.
  • PayWare ezCard, a payment card that is a virtual version of the plastic credit card for use from a wired or wireless device.

The service provider expects to launch its m-commerce initiatives in the first quarter of 2001.

MobileInfo Comments and Advisory: Carriers have to offer complete m-commerce solutions. Let us watch Nextel in executing this initiative. It is a good idea to keep the number of vendors in an end-to-end mobile commerce solution to a minimum.
