Tamino For Handheld Devices: Software AG and Birdstep Tech ASA Join Forces

Trying to meet the expectations of PC users who want the convenience of the handheld device along with the computing functionality of the desktop is one of the many challenges facing any device developer. In order to address the issue, Software AG and Birdstep Technology ASA have formed a strategic partnership to develop technologies where users can manipulate large amounts of data on a handheld device.

The Solution
The solution enables Software AG’s Tamino XML Database to exchange information with Birdstep’s DataBase Engine on handheld platforms such as Linux, QNX, VxWorks, Pocket Pc, EPOC, pSOS and Palm OS.

Birdstep DataBase Engine:

  • Ideal for a multitude of devices that require extremely efficient storage technology software.
  • Ultra small footprint database of 60K.
  • Patented atomization technique to store and manage XML structures within the database itself.
  • Supports native XML as an integral part of the device’s database system instead of only providing an XML layer on the top of the flat file or relational technology.
  • Searches for data using a search structure instead of indexes, thus saving space and improving performance.

Tamino XML Database:

  • An XML-compliant database that supports e-business applications
  • Stores XML information without converting it to other formats, such as relational tables
  • Integrates relational or object-oriented data into XML structures
  • Can access data in existing and remote databases and store it as XML objects using X-Machine technology.

"The prospect of native XML in handheld device such as organizers, Palm Tops or other m-commerce devices opens up a whole range of new applications for the Tamino XML Database," said Andreas Zeitler, head of marketing and services, Software AG.
