Compaq Announces MultiPort Technology For Integrated Wireless Connectivity

Compaq Computers unveiled its first modules for adding wireless connectivity to its up-coming commercial notebooks.

Located at the back of the notebook display, the MulitPort interface is an embedded, fully compliant Plug-and-Play module UPS port.

Compaq collaborated with Intel and Ericsson in the development of the first two modules: 802.11b wireless LAN and Bluetooth modules, which are currently available.

Intel PRO/Wireless 2011 LAN Module

  • Intel designed a new wireless LAN module to support the MultiPort’s form factor
  • Provides high-speed, flexible and secure wireless LAN connection
  • Ability to support advanced roaming capabilities throughout the building
  • Transfers data up to 11 Mbps
  • Provides the bandwidth for video streaming, file transfers, and VoIP
  • Ensures long battery life

Bluetooth™ Module

  • Based on Ericsson’s Microelectric Bluetooth Module
  • Integrated Bluetooth capabilities enables wireless connectivity between devices within 10 meters
  • Supports both point-to-point and point-to-multipoint voice and data transfers
  • Compatible with the soon-to-be released Bluetooth specification version 1.1

Commenting on the flexibility of the MultiPort, Ken Willett, vice president, product management, commercial personal computing group, Compaq, said, the MultiPort interface will allow users to connect to various wireless standards by simply changing the wireless module based on their needs. He added, "This flexibility will allow customers to easily migrate to other wireless standards as they evolve and come to market."

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory: We are surprised that it took Compaq this long to create multi-port for their notebooks.  This will make notebooks integral part of corporate LANs.
