MARKET OUTLOOK

Mobile Telephony Service Providers to Target Generation Y Market

Mobile service providers should not overlook any age group in their search for additional value-added customers, but they cannot ignore that the Generation Y segment is the highest monthly spending group, says a new study.

Dataquest Inc., a unit of Gartner Group, Inc, has released their findings in a report entitled "What Mobile Telephony Consumer Segments Will Predominately Drive Future Revenue?" This report examines the demographics of the current market, what segments of the adult population are under penetrated, and which are more likely to enhance revenue.

Snap Shot of Findings

  • Over 51 percent of all U.S. households have at least one mobile phone.
  • The percentage of adults reporting regular use of their mobile phone was 40 percent, up from 33 percent in 1999.
  • Regular use among Generation X (ages 25-34) was the highest at 48 percent.
  • Baby Boomer (ages 35-54) reported regular use at a rate of 47 percent.
  • Generation Y (ages 18-24) segment came with a regular user rate of 40 percent.
  • Fifty percent of the adults were employed full time and 21 percent have at least half of their monthly rate paid by their employer.

Conclusion

"As a greater portion of [the Generation Y] segment engage in full-time employment they will not only move up the mobile penetration curve, but will also expect their wireline Internet services be transferable to a mobile environment," said Amanda Sabia, industry analyst for Gartner Dataquest’s telecommunications group. "Generation Y members should be the early adopters of advances of mobile Internet service."
