There have been many initiatives to encourage open dialogue within the industry with the most recent being the creation of the Wireless World Research Forum by a group of wireless equipment vendors Alcatel, Ericsson, Nokia, and Siemens.

The mandate of the WWRF is to discuss the future direction of wireless research strategies as they relate to the industry and academia, as well as identify and promote technical trends in wireless technologies. Furthermore, it intends to reach out to the UTMS Forum, ETSI, 3GPP, IETF, ITU and other relevant bodies regarding commercial and standardization issues derived from the research work.

The founding companies are inviting all interested parties to participate. Members are encouraged to contribute papers and ideas and participate in three working sessions and a workshop to be organized by the WWRF next year.

The WWRF’s initial work will be based on efforts of the Wireless Strategic Initiative, which was established by the founding members of the WWRF. A report documenting the Initiative’s efforts focusing on the development of initial concepts for the wireless sector will be released shortly.
