Nokia Launches WAP 2.0 Toolkit and Wap Server 1.1

For network operators, application developers, and content providers, Nokia has announced its latest version of its WAP Toolkit -- WAP Toolkit 2.0. It is a free software tool that provides PC-based environment for developers to write, test, and de-bug WAP 1.1 and 1.2 applications.

Developers can now create complete applications without a handset or access to carrier infrastructure. They can navigate and request URLs on either a limited version of the Nokia WAP Server that is included with each toolkit or any Web server on the Internet. In addition, applications can be stored and queried directly from the PC file system.

Components of the Nokia WAP Toolkit 2.0

  • WML and WMLScript editors for creating and editing static WML and WMLScript content
  • Support for limited WAP 1.2 functionality, including push services, WML and WMLScript
  • Device simulators, including an exact Nokia 7100 Series simulator, running WML browsers for viewing WAP content
  • Debugging and testing tools that show detailed information about the application execution
  • WMBP Graphics tools that allow developers to convert GIF and JPEG images into a WMBP and then modify the images
  • Sample applications in source code to use as a starting point
  • Support for both VCARD (business card) and VCAL (calendar events)

WAP Server 1.1

It complies with WAP 1.1 specification and uses WTSL security.  It includes generic WAP e-mail connector, SNMP, Terminal bearer functionality, Cookie Proxy, and support of WML and WMLscript content. Nokia's 6210, 6250, and 7110 phones support WAP, as does its 9110i communicator - enhanced version of its original clam-shell 9100 - a combination phone and PDA.

Another feature of Nokia WAP Server 1.1 is "Nokia Active" that lets Web sites send WAP service settings to WAP-enabled phones.

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory: A good development tool from a major player. However, application developers must move on to supporting other phones too, particularly from Qualcomm.

Note: This news release may contain forward-looking statements. Readers should take appropriate caution in developing plans utilizing these products, services and technology architectures.
