Sierra Wireless and TELUS Mobility to Develop Next-Generation of CDMA PC Cards

Building on their long-standing R&D relationship, Sierra Wireless and TELUS Mobility have come together this time to develop a next generation CDMA Type II PC card for use in laptops and handheld devices.

The two Canadian companies claim that the PC card under development will provide voice and data communications up to 144 kilobits per second, marking a ten-fold increase over CDMA PC cards currently on the market.

This R&D initiative will take advantage of CDMA’s wide spectrum technology such as improved call quality, enhanced privacy, increased talk time and bandwidth on demand. This technology will provide TELUS Mobility with the migration capability to the third generation technology, the companies said in a joint statement.

Commenting on the benefits of the initiative, Scott McArthur, director of technology development at TELUS Mobility, said, "This next generation PC card will allow TELUS Mobility to deliver superior solutions to our customers as we evolve our network to 3G technology." He added, the increase in rate transmission will "significantly increase the value of the wireless Internet and wireless connectivity to corporate databases, intranets, and multimedia applications."

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory: We have watched Sierra Wireless since 1995 when they were small Vancover company and started their CDPD card implementation. They had faith in the ultimate success of wireless in spite of slow acceptance of wireless applications in late 90's. This persistence and diligence has paid off.  Now, they have created a well-deserved niche for themselves in building modems (radio transceivers with antenna, more appropriately) for the wireless market. This initiative should give them a customer trial ground with Telus and others.
