Silicon Wave to Accelerate the Integration of Bluetooth

Designer of RF communication system components Silicon Wave Inc. has announced the availability of its Bluetooth qualified Odyssey Baseband and Software as reusable IP via a newly established licensing program.

The company says that by integrating the Bluetooth qualified RadioModem, the SiW1502, along with the reusable IP into their own silicon, customers can drive down the cost of Bluetooth to the industry target of $5. The Odyssey IP can be integrated into the leading processors including Arm, MIPs, and X86.

"Our Odyssey IP products will help accelerate the integration of Bluetooth into a wide range of wireless devices, said Dave Lyon, CEO of Silicon Wave. "By offering the basic building blocks for Bluetooth baseband operations, our IP licensing program will allow customers to focus on product applications, which will allow them to not only shorten their time-to-market, but also will ensure a superior end-user experience."

The Odyssey IP:

  • Full-featured Bluetooth 1.1. compliant product
  • Support for the following:
  • Point-to-point
  • Point-to-multi-point
  • Master/slave switch
  • Flow control
  • All SCO and ACL data packet types
  • Provides low power modes including sniff, hold and park, and transmit power control

The Odyssey Software:

  • Developed with CPU resources requiring only 12 Kbytes RAM, 128 Kbytes ROM, and less then 5 MIPS load on the host
  • Through the use of an OS adaptation layer, it can be ported to a wide range of micro-controllers and associated RTOS such as WinCE, Embedded Linux, VxWorks, Palm, Micro-Itron and others

The Odyssey Basband Silicon IP is 100% digital, available as silicon proven easy to synthesize VHDL, and can be interfaced with a variety of processors bus types, the company said.

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory: We welcome this news - this will push the price of vbluetooth down.  With lower margins, only mass manufacturers and designers will stay in the Bluetooth silicon manufacturing business.  Other 1200 Bluetooth startups should either exit or move into applications and integration of Bluetooth into other application components - software and hardware. This is good for adoption of Bluetooth.
