MARKET OUTLOOK

Over Hype Could Kill Bluetooth, report warns

Will Bluetooth live up to the claims made by its promoters and do people really want it? These were just two questions that Visiongain, a U.K. based publishing company, posed to those in the Bluetooth industry. In its recently published report, ‘The Bluetooth Report,’ Visiongain’s analysts presented the opinions of experts on their approach to Bluetooth as well as an examination of such questions as

  • Is there a market for Bluetooth?
  • How does Bluetooth compare to other technologies?
  • How secure will Bluetooth transmission be?

According to the report, there will be 40,000 Bluetooth-enabled handsets shipped in the U.S. next year, with the Bluetooth compliant laptops accounting for 20 percent of the market.

Commenting on the future prospects of the technology, Ben Thacker, a senior analyst at Visiongain, said, "Despite all the delays and problems it remains a very promising technology, with plenty of medium and long-term applications. But the real test will be whether it survives the hype promoters are laying on it, with their unrealistic claims."

The success of Bluetooth may lie in its association with 2.5G and 3G mobile technologies. If it is included as a standard into the next generation of handsets, its use will become familiar, thus opening the door for expansion and diversification, Mr. Thacker said.
