ACCESS Launches New Microbrowser for Next Generation of Mobile Phones

At the recent CeBIT in Hanover, Germany, ACCESS Co., Ltd. launched and demonstrated its Compact NetFront Plus, a new microbrowser that supports WML 1.3 used in WAP, cHTML used in i-mode, and XHTM Basic a subset of XHTML. For the mobile phone user, this means that they can seamlessly access Internet content on any one of these three formats.

The Tokyo-based company said Compact NetFront Plus™ sets a new standard in micro browsers for the 2.5G and 3G global mobile phone markets. Using a single browser that can access Internet content based on both HTML and WML, manufacturers will be able to save memory size and shorten development time.

Compact NetFront Plus

  • Based on ACCESS’s Compact NetFront™ microbrowser that supports cHTML
  • Modular architecture makes it easy for device manufacturers to port to a familiar CPU and OS
  • A simplified window system enables developers to separate the development of hardware-dependent software, such as serial drivers and network protocol stacks, from other device-independent sub-system development
  • An independent user interface allows manufacturers to customize the UI, icons, status bars, e-mail, screen, and message dialog boxes

Dr. Tomihisa Kamada, executive vice president and CTO of ACCESS, said Compact NetFront Plus enables not only device manufacturers but also operators, server vendors, and content providers to leverage the untapped potential of the wireless Internet, as the industry moves from 2.5G to 3G.

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory:  Compact NetFront browser from Tokyo is a good effort to unify different web content exchange and display protocols.  We are of the opinion that for short to medium term, multiple web protocols for wireless MUST be supported. This includes WAP's WML, HTML, cHTML and XML.
