Nokia Introduces New Mobile Phones

The Finnish device manufacturer Nokia has introduced four new mobile phones to meet the needs of the North America and Latin America markets, as well as a high-end phone to meet the future demand for always-on connectivity, with the emergence of GPRS.

At the recent CTIA Global Wireless trade show in Las Vergas, Nokia unveiled four new mobile phones based on North American CDMA and TDMA systems for a mass market.

The tri-band 3285 CDMA and dual-band 3280 CDMA handsets and the tri-band 3360 TDMA and dual-band 3320 TDMA, all of which will offer limited Internet browsing capabilities. Incorporating WAP technology, the phones also feature Internet e-mail and advanced text and graphic picture messaging.

Later the same week at the CeBIT show in Hanover, Germany, Nokia went head-on with Ericsson, who also unveiled a next generation phone, with the launch of its new WAP-enabled phone for GPRS. Designed for the business user, the Nokia 6310 has built-in Bluetooth capabilities for wirelessly transferring data with a nearby Bluetooth-enabled device.

Features of the Nokia 6310

  • HSCSD (High-Speed Circuit Switched Data) enables data to be transmitted at speeds of up to 43.2 kbps.
  • SyncML standard for synchronizing data with other devices
  • Voice features such as voice recording and voice dialing
  • VCard support makes it possible to automatically save contact information such as business cards listing on a WAP site to the phone’s memory
  • Wireless Telephony Application Interface Public Library, which enabled the user to make a call from a WAP site, without terminating the WAP session

The Nokia 6310 will be available by the end of the year.

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory:  GPRS (2.5G) smartphones will provide faster access to the Internet. We like the capability to make a call without terminating the WAP session. However, dependence on WAP suggests that for future i-mode, CHTML or non-WAP implementations, the consumers may have to upgrade. Half life of smartphones is not getting any better.
