Wireless Access to Northwest Airlines Expands

Northwest Airlines is determined to make traveling convenient for its customers. Recently, the American airline introduced a wireless rebooking feature for customers using Sprint PCS Wireless Web or AT&T Digital PocketNet services. In addition, the company will be offering its nwa.com information and service via OmniSky Corporation.

Wireless Rebooking
At present, the service is only for those customers who have purchased an E-Ticket on the airline and, then later, are faced with a cancelled flight. The new flight on which the traveler has been confirmed is displayed on their Web-enabled phone. They can confirm or choose from three alternative flights. Once a flight is selected, the reservation is ready for check-in at an airport E-Ticket Center. While customers can rebook, they still cannot reserve new flights.

Commenting on the benefits of the service, Al Lenze, vice president of Northwest Airlines, said, "While the number of customers impacted by cancelled flights, is small, those customers who are affected will find this service quick, easy, and flexible.

OmniSky
OmniSky Corporation, along with Sprint PCS Wireless Web, AT&T Digital PocketNet and AvantGo, will make nwa.com information available to its subscribers with e-mail and Internet service. Using their Web-enabled phones or PDAs, subscribers can check flights and gate status, review WorldPerks mileage balance, view travel reservations, and download timetables.

The airline said that its partnership with OmniSky marks the first offering of real-time nwa.com content for PDA users.

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory:  Use of smartphones and PDAs for airline booking will increase in the next three years because users are highly mobile and need instant access to the reservation services wherever they are..
