Palm Sets Out Year-Long Strategy

Even though its competitors continue to bundle more and more bells and whistles into their handheld devices, Palm, Inc. plans to stay the course only offering users what they need.

At a recent event in San Francisco, Michael Mace, chief competitive officer and vice president of product planning and strategy at Palm, stressed that the company will focus on providing the essentials, such as battery life, display quality, and wireless network access speeds rather than more application-filled devices. During the course of this address, Mr. Mace outlined what we can expect to see from Palm in the next 12 months, as reported by CNN.

The First Half of 2001

  • Launch of wireless aids to give the users more versatile access to their applications
  • Release of the Palm OS v4.0 will enable users to gain access to built-in mobile phone support, as SMS, audible e-mail notification, enhanced security, and support for USB and Bluetooth technologies
  • Introduce a host of clip-on modems for wireless access

The Second Half of 2001

  • Enhance Bluetooth support, allowing wireless communication between a host of devices over short distances
  • Introduce add-on thumb keyboards for typing, the ability to conduct electronic transactions, and high resolution screens
  • Enhance multimedia functionality to include support for sounds, graphics, and music.

Entering 2002

  • Introduce units built on a new chip architecture created by U.K.-based ARM
  • Build ARM technology into Palm OS version 5.0 to improve device battery life

While Palm sets out to offer simple devices that interactive with wireless networks, it will leave the development of sophisticated applications to its licensees.

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory:  Palm's strategy has been highly device and OS-oriented. With its acquisition of Extended Systems, it wants to move into the enterprise. We think that is a smart move. But Enterprise division will need a lots of money, professional resources and partnerships.
