Industry Supports XHTML

In a world laden with competing standard, the wireless industry has taken a commendable step forward in the evolution of a truly global marketplace by endorsing XHTML as the format for future wireless services.

Support has come from every corner of the industry, including handset manufacturers, Nokia, Motorola, Siemens, Ericsson; mobile operators, Vodafone Group, Orange, Sonera; content providers, CNN, AOL, Sabre, and others like Sun Microsystems, Oracle, Adobe and Macromedia.

"The adoption of XHTML by the wireless industry further demonstrates that open, standards based protocols are critical to accelerate the growth" of all segments of the industry, said Rich Green, vice president and general manager of Java Software, Sun Microsystems.

The companies expressed their intention to develop products, content and services based on the XHTML language.

What does XHTML promise?

  • Bridge the gap between the WAP and the fixed Internet thus opening up a vast pool of content and applications to consumers
  • Opportunity to create and implement visually appealing, yet backward WAP-compatible, services
  • Advantage of XHTML’s cascading style sheets that will offer significant advances to how content is present, enabling content to be specifically tailored to meet the requirements of different handsets.
  • Creation of innovative mobile multimedia services

Commentators and analysts alike are commending the industry on its commitment to XHTML. Richard Aibers, a partner with the consulting firm Accenture, commented that this platform will begin to eliminate the challenges and hurdles that the industry has faced, to date, by making broader web content available wirelessly.

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory:  It is good to follow a standard but there must be adaptation of that standard if wireless presents unique challenges.
