Broadcom Introduces Bluetooth Radio Chip Designed for Mobile Phones
Broadcom Corporation has
introduced the Broadcom® BCM2002X, described as the world’s first all-CMOS
Bluetooth radio chip designed
specifically for use in mobile phones.
The BCM2002X expands "our [Blutomium™] product line to accommodate
requirements for mobile devices in GPRS, CDMA, and 3G phones and
significantly reduces the complexity manufacturers face when adding
Bluetooth to electronic devices," said K.C. Murphy, vice president and
general manager of Broadcom’s RF and Advanced Mixed Signal Business Unit.
"Our BCM2002X provides an application specific solution, which is
essential to ensure broad acceptance and usage of Bluetooth in voice+data
mobile applications, said Craig Ochikubo, product line manager for the
BCM2002X.
Notable Features of the BCM2002X:
- Strong spurious emissions performance, as it minimizes interference
with transmissions taking place in the bands used by the mobile phone
- Exceptional blocking performance, as its highly linear design
eliminates radio frequency filtering to receive strong signals from
other Bluetooth devices
- Optimized cell phone integration, as the radio design eases
integration into the mobile phone environment while maintaining high
performance and optimizing cell performance
- Fractional-N frequency generation technology, as it enables chip to
base its operation on a number of different reference frequencies
The company said that the CMOS Bluetooth radio and baseband transceiver
chips, including BCM2002X , are sampling today to early access partners.

Mobileinfo Comments and
Advisory: Good news for hardware
integrators involved with Bluetooth. We are bullish about Bluetooth
prospects. Those who are complaining that there is slow progress with
Bluetooth do not realize the sequence of events in the adoption of any
new technology. A number of things have to fall in place before it takes off.
It is not like fax machine or cell phones that take off as soon as you build
them and price them right.
