Hospital of the Future Set to Open in 2003
Rehabilitation healthcare
specialist HealthSouth Corporation has announced that it has joined
forces with Oracle Corp. to build the first all-digital, automated
hospital in Birmingham, Alabama. The 219-bed facility will include
patient beds with display screens with Internet access; electronic
medical records storage; digital imaging will replace traditional
x-rays; and wireless communications networks that will allow
healthcare providers to up-date and access patients’ medical
records from anywhere in the world.
Commenting on the benefits of such a facility, Richard Scrushy,
chairman and CEO of HealthSouth, said, "We will demonstrate how
technology can lower healthcare costs, greatly reduce [human] error
and provide patients with the best medical care available."
The Oracle E-Business Suite will provide the foundation on which
to improve the healthcare
industry’s administrative and business processes, said
Lawrence Ellison, chairman and CEO of Oracle. He added, "Oracle
will be working with HealthSouth in the development of Oracle’s
new healthcare software, which will include core clinical
applications as well as access and outreach systems."
According to HealthSouth, this state of the art building will
cost between $100-million and $125-million and should be open by mid
to late 2003. HealthSouth is already looking at 10 more cities where
similar hospitals could be built, Mr. Scrushy told The Associated
Press.
