Handspring Licenses Certicom Tech
Certicom of Hayward, California, announced that it has entered
into a licensing agreement with Handspring for use of Certicom’s
security technologies throughout its product line.
Commenting on the benefits of the agreement, Handspring’s vice
president of product marketing Joe Sipher said, "With Certicom
technology our customers will be able to use Handspring products to
conduct secure e-commerce transactions with confidence."
Handspring of Mountain View, California, will use Certicom’s
high performance security technology, SSL Plus™ for Embedded
Systems with Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC). The company said it
first intends to integrate the technology with its Blazer™ Web
browsing software for use with its VisorPhone™, thus offering
users a greater range of Web-based applications where secure
browsing and transactions are required.

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory: This
is a step in the right direction to make give Visor secure for
sensitive e-mail but Handspring will have to match
Blackberry's 128 bit encryption and end-to-end security behind the
firewall for satisfying security-conscious IT professionals. For most
common applications, Certicom's ECC is adequate.
