Microcell Rolls Out 2.5G Services Across Canada and U.S.
Montreal-based Microcell
Connexions Inc. has rolled out its GPRS services across Canada
and the U.S., one month ahead of schedule.
"Users of the Microcell network will be the first to benefit
from the ‘one network, one world’ power of a combined GSM voice
and GPRS data service," said Alain Rheaume, president and CEO
of Microcell PCS. "A number of service providers, including, of
course, Fido, using the Microcell network will soon introduce
GPRS-based services to their customers."
The company said that its 2.5G services now reach subscribers
from coast to coast, with the intention of delivering data services
travelers and mobile professionals.
Commenting on Microcell’s successful interoperability testing
of GPRS with U.S.-based VoiceStream Wireless, Alex Brisbourne, vice
president and general manager of Business Development, said,
"Now, this means that Canadians traveling to over 4,000 cities
in North America can have the benefit of data connectivity without
the hassles of calling cards and special cables."

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory: It
is now obvious that GSM carriers will move to 2.5 GPRS service ahead
of other technologies. But this lead may be short-lived.
