Motorola to Offer Presence Detection
Motorola has entered into
an agreement with Personity Inc. to offer network operators a
presence technology that detects if the user’s device is turned on
to receive messages and allows the user to control who and when
others can reach them.
Dan Cohen, CEO of Personity told MBizCentral (a mobile online
magazine) "The notion of
presence is that you are potentially available to communicate, but
that it has to be filtered through availability, your personal
preferences and your rules. We’ve extracted that essence and built
it into a large-scale infrastructure that can be used by network
operators."
The Motorola Messenger system, powered by Personity’s presence
and availability management technology, on Motorola’s latest GPRS
phones and two-way pagers will enable users to control how and with
whom they want to communicate at any given time.
The Key Components of the Solution
- Presence Technology identifies which communications media—
from a wireless device to an instant messaging application to an
e-mail application— are available for communication at any
given moment.
- Management technology to provide the user with the control
over how they are reached and by whom.
- Message exchange will enable users to exchange instant
messages between devices, PDAs, wireless phones, or PCs,
regardless of platform or carrier.
Under the terms of the agreement, Motorola plans to license the
Personity™ Presence and Availability Management (PAM)
infrastructure technology, including Personity’s carrier-grade
infrastructure servers and client applications.

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory: Personal
presence technology is important for instant messaging. This should
give individuals greater control in conducting more efficient
communications with their personal buddies and professional
colleagues.
