Pfizer, Microsoft and IBM Partner to Offer MDs Wireless Solutions

Pfizer, Microsoft, and IBM will collaborate to form an independent company to develop software and services to reduce the administrative workload of physicians in private practice.

The new company will focus on the needs of office-based physicians, particularly those in smaller groups, which represent 70 percent of the office-based doctors in the United States, the companies said.

To help doctors reduce and streamline their administrative work, the companies are proposing offering Microsoft’s .NET Enterprise Server Platform, Windows 2000 and wireless devices. The product offering will emphasize the integration of clinical, financial, and administrative tools, enabling doctors easy access to medical histories, insurance information, and lab results while examining a patient. A high quality encoding system will be implemented to ensure that all information is securely transmitted.

The new company is expected to make its first products available later this year. According to the three founding companies, the new enterprise will be pursuing acquisitions, partnerships and other investments to provide a comprehensive product offering.

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory: This initiative sounds too good to be true - IBM putting its weight behind Microsoft's .NET strategy so early in its marketing cycle.  Typically, IBM would do such a thing only when there is significant market acceptance of Microsoft's technology. We do not think there is any thing unique in Microsoft's .NET implementation that makes it more suitable for wireless. All that you need for wireless applications is available on existing platforms.
