Proxim Files Legal Action to Get its Fair Share
Proxim Inc. has filed
legal proceedings against six manufacturers that sell direct
sequence WLAN
products and services based on 802.11b standard.
Vice president of business development at Proxim Kevin Negus,
said, "Our goal in taking these legal actions is simply to
receive fair compensation for the use of our valuable intellectual
property rights." The company owns patents for the
implementation techniques used in many products that comply with
standards IEEE 802.11b and IEEE 802.11DS.
The companies mentioned in the suit are 3Com, Cisco, Intersil,
SMC, Symbol, and Wayport.
Amidst the launching of legal proceedings, Proxim announced that
it is now offering vendors selling WLAN products and services a
royalty-bearing license under the company’s direct sequence
wireless networking technology patents. The license will allow such
companies to continue selling direct sequence WLAN products and
services, while providing Proxim with fair compensation, said the
company.

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory: We
can not comment on legal merit of this law suit but feel that
adoption of a public-domain standard like IEEE 802.11 should be done
in such a way that a vendor either gives up its intellegual property
in the interest of its wide-spread adoption or lays down the rules
of the game before its adoption. .
