IBM and Carrier to Test Web-enabled Air Conditioner
International Business
Machines Corp. and Carrier Corp., the world-renowned air conditioner
manufacturer, will commence pilot testing the first Web-enabled air
conditioners in Europe this summer. Using a PC or WAP-enabled
cellphone, consumers will be able to remotely adjust the temperature
or turn the unit off or on.
The new service called Myappliance.com will be built on IBM
services, software, and hardware. In an effort to provide customers
with prompt service, Myappliance.com will send ‘fault codes’ and
other diagnostic alerts to Carrier dealers via fax, e-mail, or
mobile phone.
IBM will design the end-to-end architecture from the embedded
Java running inside the units to the backend Web servers to the Web
browsers in mobile phones, the company said. The hardware will be
IBM @server running AIX, while the software components will comprise
of the following:
- WebSphere
Everyplace Suite Enterprise Edition™
- WebSphere Application Server™
- Visual Age Micro Edition J9 Virtual Machine
After the trials this summer, the companies are looking to extend
the program throughout Europe and North America, with expectation of
supporting PDAs along with Internet-enabled cellphones.

Mobileinfo Comments and Advisory: The
neat thing about this announcement is two-fold. One the incorporation
of wireless-controlled switch and its activation from the web. The day
when you will be control your house appliances, lights and security
systems from your hotel is nearing. Use of Java in embedded systems is
